The Adventures of Invisible Boy: From Zero to Hero

by Doogie Horner

A shy, overlooked boy named Stanley discovers he can turn invisible — but being invisible isn't all it's cracked up to be, especially when a mad scientist and a robot sidekick get involved in his quest to be seen.

Focus question: How does an author-illustrator speed up and slow down a funny graphic novel so readers feel both the excitement of adventure and the hurt of being ignored? In The Adventures of Invisible Boy: From Zero to Hero by Doogie Horner, Stanley’s ability to turn invisible creates quick, surprising scenes, while the words and pictures also pause to show his loneliness, kindness, and wish to be noticed. Horner uses comic panels, page turns, dialogue, and visual humor to control pacing and help readers feel Stanley’s journey from overlooked kid to true friend and hero.

Element	How to notice or teach it in the novel
Pace	Read: Notice how the story speeds up when Stanley uses his invisibility during chaotic moments with the mad scientist and robot sidekick, then slows down when he feels unseen or left out. Classroom Activity: Write 4-6 sentences about a school day that starts slow because no one notices you, then suddenly speeds up when something surprising happens.
Plot	Read: Track how Stanley’s problem grows from being ignored to getting pulled into a bigger adventure involving invisibility, danger, and the chance to become a hero. Classroom Activity: Make a 5-box plot map labeled beginning, problem, bigger problem, hero moment, ending, and then write one sentence for each box.
Prosody	Read: Listen for how a reader’s voice changes in funny parts, tense parts, and quiet parts, especially in speech bubbles and action scenes. Classroom Activity: Choose one short scene with Stanley and practice reading it aloud three ways—worried, excited, and brave—then write which version fits best and why.
Word pause	Read: Notice where single words, short speech bubbles, or tiny captions make you stop for a beat before the next joke or surprise. Classroom Activity: Write a 6-8 line comic script about a character hiding a secret power, using at least three one-word pauses such as “Wait,” “Uh-oh,” or “Yikes.”
Concept	Read: Think about the big idea that being invisible can feel powerful at first, but Stanley really wants friendship, kindness, and to be truly seen. Classroom Activity: Write 3-5 sentences explaining how invisibility can be both a superpower and a lonely feeling.
Voice & World View	Read: Notice how the book’s voice is playful and humorous, but still understands what it feels like to be shy, overlooked, and hopeful. Classroom Activity: Write a journal entry in Stanley’s voice about one day when he wishes someone would notice his kindness.
Setting & Place	Read: Pay attention to how school, secret-lair-style spaces, and action-filled locations help change the speed and feeling of the story. Classroom Activity: Draw and label one setting from Stanley’s adventure, then write 4 sentences explaining how that place makes the scene feel calm, funny, or dangerous.
Point of View	Read: Notice how readers stay close to Stanley’s experience, so we understand his embarrassment, confusion, and growing courage. Classroom Activity: Rewrite one moment from the point of view of the robot sidekick or another side character, showing how they see Stanley.
Original Characters	Read: Study how Doogie Horner creates memorable characters: Stanley the invisible boy, a mad scientist, and a robot sidekick who add humor and conflict. Classroom Activity: Invent an original sidekick for Stanley and write a character card with name, special skill, weakness, and one funny line of dialogue.
Dialogue	Read: Notice how speech bubbles reveal personality fast—Stanley may sound unsure, while villains or sidekicks can sound dramatic or silly. Classroom Activity: Write 8 lines of dialogue between Stanley and a new friend where one character feels invisible and the other tries to show kindness.
Details	Read: Look closely at small visual and word details that make jokes land and help readers notice Stanley’s feelings even when he says little. Classroom Activity: Write a sentence about Stanley entering a room, then revise it by adding three specific details that show he feels ignored.
Descriptions	Read: Notice how descriptions in a graphic novel may come from both words and pictures, especially when showing Stanley’s invisibility, awkward moments, or action scenes. Classroom Activity: Describe what Stanley looks like when he is trying hard to be noticed, using 5 vivid describing words.
Strong First Lines	Read: Think about how the opening quickly introduces Stanley’s problem and makes readers curious about an invisible boy’s life. Classroom Activity: Write three possible first lines for a humorous story about a kid with a secret power who has a friendship problem.
Immediacy & Engagement	Read: Notice how quick scenes, expressive art, and funny trouble pull readers right into Stanley’s problems with almost no delay. Classroom Activity: Write the opening of a scene that starts in the middle of action, such as Stanley already running, hiding, or whispering, instead of explaining everything first.
Story Scenes & Summaries & Unique Structures	Read: Notice how some parts play out moment by moment in comic scenes, while other parts move quickly to the next important event. Classroom Activity: Write one event from Stanley’s day as a full scene with dialogue, then write another event as a 2-sentence summary.
Flashback & Flash Forward & Cliffhangers	Read: Watch for places where the story hints at what might happen next or ends a page or section with a surprise that makes you keep reading. Classroom Activity: Write a 3-panel comic ending with a cliffhanger in which Stanley opens a door and finds something shocking.
Tension & Suspense & Surprise	Read: Notice how the story builds suspense when Stanley’s invisibility causes trouble and when the mad scientist’s plans become more dangerous or weird. Classroom Activity: Write 5 sentences that build from normal to tense to surprising, ending with a reveal connected to a hidden power.
Page Turns and Chapter Breaks	Read: Pay attention to how page turns in this graphic novel often hold back a joke, reveal, or problem until the exact right moment. Classroom Activity: Plan a 2-page mini-comic and write what readers should see before the page turn and what surprise comes after it.
Performance	Read: Notice how the characters’ faces, poses, and exaggerated reactions make scenes feel like a performance on a stage. Classroom Activity: Choose a funny or tense Stanley scene and perform it with a partner, then write 2 sentences about which gestures made the pacing stronger.
Personality	Read: Study how Stanley’s shy personality affects the speed of the story—hesitation slows it down, while brave choices move it forward. Classroom Activity: Write a paragraph about how one personality trait, such as shyness or bravery, can change what happens next in a story.
Humor	Read: Notice how humor comes from invisibility mix-ups, exaggerated villain energy, robot sidekick moments, and Stanley’s awkward situation. Classroom Activity: Write a short comic scene where a superpower causes a silly misunderstanding, but end with a kind moment between friends.
Pause	Read: Look for moments when the story pauses after a joke, before danger, or during a feeling, letting readers think about Stanley’s loneliness or courage. Classroom Activity: Write 4-5 sentences about a character waiting before making a brave choice, using one very short sentence for emphasis.
Poetry and Poetic Devices	Read: Even in a humorous graphic novel, repeated sounds, strong images, and playful language can add energy to Stanley’s adventure. Classroom Activity: Write a 4-line poem about invisibility using alliteration, such as “silent, sneaky, secret steps.”
Repetition	Read: Notice how repeated ideas—being unseen, wanting friendship, and trying again—help connect Stanley’s emotional journey and the jokes. Classroom Activity: Write a paragraph that repeats a key phrase such as “No one saw…” three times, then ends with “Until they did.”
Rhythm	Read: Feel the rhythm created by short panels, quick dialogue, and bursts of action followed by slower emotional beats. Classroom Activity: Write 6 lines of a comic script with this rhythm: quick, quick, pause, quick, pause, big ending.
Punctuation	Read: Notice how exclamation marks, ellipses, question marks, and bold comic-style wording help show panic, humor, and surprise in Stanley’s adventure. Classroom Activity: Write one line of dialogue three different ways by changing the punctuation to show fear, excitement, and confusion.
Questions	Read: Think about the questions readers ask while reading: Will Stanley be noticed? Can invisibility solve his problems? Who can he trust? Classroom Activity: Write three reader questions about Stanley at the start of the story and three answers you think the ending gives.
Compare-Contrast	Read: Compare Stanley’s quiet, kind nature with the loud energy of the mad scientist and the comic presence of the robot sidekick. Classroom Activity: Make a T-chart comparing Stanley and the mad scientist, then write 3 sentences about how their differences create humor and conflict.
Objects	Read: Notice how important objects in a graphic novel can shape the action, especially anything connected to invisibility, experiments, or robot gadgets. Classroom Activity: Invent one object Stanley uses to help a friend, then write 4 sentences explaining how it changes the story.
Threes	Read: Look for groups of three in jokes, actions, or attempts, because three tries often make humor stronger and pacing clearer. Classroom Activity: Write a funny sequence where Stanley tries three times to get noticed, with the third try turning the story in a new direction.
Whitespace & Negative Space	Read: Study how empty space around Stanley, especially when he feels alone or invisible, can make a scene quieter and more emotional. Classroom Activity: Sketch a simple comic panel with lots of empty space around a character, then write 2 sentences explaining how the emptiness affects the mood.
Art & Graphics	Read: Notice how the illustrations, panel size, facial expressions, and action lines do storytelling work that regular paragraphs would do in another kind of book. Classroom Activity: Create a 3-panel comic showing Stanley going from shy to surprised to brave, using art choices to show each feeling.
Interactives & Gamification	Read: As you read, treat the story like a challenge: predict what Stanley will do next, spot clues in the art, and track hero choices that show friendship and kindness. Classroom Activity: Make a “Hero Meter” for Stanley with 5 moments from the book, then write one new scene that would move him up one more level.

Pace-Write It!

20-Minute Classroom Flow Read (5 min): Read a short section from The Adventures of Invisible Boy: From Zero to Hero that shows Stanley feeling ignored and then getting pulled into a fast, funny problem with the mad scientist or robot sidekick. Ask students to listen for where the story speeds up and where it slows down. Notice (5 min): Students turn and talk: Where did Doogie Horner use panels, dialogue, page turns, or pauses to control pacing? Chart two columns: “Fast Parts” and “Slow Parts.” Add examples connected to Stanley’s feelings, humor, and friendship theme. Write (7 min): Students write their own short comic-style scene about a character who feels unnoticed but gets a chance to help someone. Writing frame: “At first, ______ felt invisible because ______. Then, everything changed when ______. First, ______. Next, ______. Finally, ______ showed kindness by ______, and that made ______.” Encourage students to include one short pause line, one surprising moment, and one kind action. Share (3 min): Partners read their scenes aloud with expression, showing where the pacing speeds up and slows down. Invite 1-2 students to share how they used humor, dialogue, or a cliffhanger. Exit ticket: Write one sentence answering: How did Doogie Horner use pacing to help readers understand Stanley’s feelings and his journey from overlooked kid to hero?
