Discussion Questions
- 1.How does the video game format change the way we read the story compared to a traditional book?
- 2.Why is it important for Super Rabbit Boy to keep going even after he loses a life in the game?
- 3.What qualities make a good hero, and how does Robo-Rabbit Boy demonstrate these?
- 4.How do the illustrations help us understand the action that isn't written in the words?
- 5.If you were designing a level for this game, what kind of obstacles would you include and why?
Lesson Plan
Learning Goals
- Identify the narrative structure of a video-game-inspired story.
- Understand how visual details contribute to storytelling.
- Practice sequencing events to create a logical plot progression.
- Develop creative problem-solving skills by designing game mechanics.
Activity Steps
- 1.Review the 'Press Start' structure by identifying the goal, the obstacle, and the resolution in the book.
- 2.Provide students with a storyboard template featuring 4-6 blank panels.
- 3.Ask students to draw a new challenge for Super Rabbit Boy, including a specific enemy or trap.
- 4.Have students write a short caption for each panel to describe the action.
- 5.Invite students to share their levels with a partner to see if the 'gameplay' makes sense.

Pace-Write-Read Study with Pace-Write It!
Thomas Flintham’s 'Press Start!' series is a masterclass in using visual pacing to mimic the experience of playing a video game. By blending comic-book-style panels with traditional prose, Flintham controls exactly how fast the reader moves through the action, using the 'page turn' as a digital level transition. This book teaches students that writing is not just about words, but about the rhythm of information delivery. In this study, we look at how Flintham uses 'game logic' to structure his plot. The pacing is intentionally snappy, mirroring the high-stakes, fast-paced nature of gaming. By analyzing how he balances dialogue, action, and visual cues, students learn how to manipulate the reader's experience, creating moments of high tension followed by the relief of a 'power-up' or a successful level completion.
| Element | How to notice or teach it in the novel |
|---|---|
| Pace | The pace is fast and rhythmic, mimicking the quick reflexes required in video games. |
| Plot | The plot follows a clear, repetitive quest structure: goal, obstacle, and victory. |
| Prosody | Encourage students to read with excitement, emphasizing the 'game' sounds and action verbs. |
| Word Pause | Use the gaps between panels to create natural pauses that allow the reader to process the visual action. |
| Concept | The core concept is the intersection of digital gaming and traditional storytelling. |
| Voice & World View | The voice is enthusiastic and encouraging, reflecting the perspective of a gamer. |
| Setting & Place | The setting is a digital world, which allows for imaginative, non-realistic environments. |
| Point of View | The story is told through the lens of the game, keeping the reader focused on the hero's immediate mission. |
| Original Characters | Super Rabbit Boy is a classic hero archetype adapted for a modern, digital context. |
| Dialogue | Dialogue is sparse and punchy, keeping the focus on the action rather than long explanations. |
| Details | Visual details in the art provide the 'how' of the story, while text provides the 'what'. |
| Descriptions | Descriptions are minimal, relying on the illustrations to set the scene. |
| Strong First Lines | The book starts with immediate action, dropping the reader right into the game. |
| Immediacy & Engagement | The direct address to the reader makes them feel like they are playing the game. |
| Story Scenes & Summaries & Unique Structures | The structure is episodic, with each chapter acting like a new level. |
| Flashback & Flash Forward & Cliffhangers | Cliffhangers are used at the end of chapters to mimic the 'next level' anticipation. |
| Tension & Suspense & Surprise | Tension is built through the threat of losing a life, which is a universal gaming trope. |
| Page Turns and Chapter Breaks | Page turns are used to reveal the outcome of a dangerous situation. |
| Performance | The book invites a performance-based reading style, full of energy and sound effects. |
| Personality | Super Rabbit Boy’s personality is defined by his determination and bravery. |
| Humor | Humor comes from the absurdity of the game world and the hero's reactions. |
| Pause | Pauses are used strategically before a big boss battle to build anticipation. |
| Poetry and Poetic Devices | The repetition of game phrases acts like a rhythmic refrain. |
| Repetition | Repetition of game mechanics helps the reader understand the rules of the world. |
| Rhythm | The rhythm is dictated by the alternating panels and text blocks. |
| Punctuation | Exclamation points are used frequently to heighten the sense of urgency. |
| Questions | Questions are used to engage the reader in the hero's decision-making process. |
| Compare-Contrast | Compare the 'game world' rules to the 'real world' rules. |
| Objects | Power-ups are key objects that change the trajectory of the story. |
| Threes | The rule of three is often used in the obstacles the hero must overcome. |
| Whitespace & Negative Space | Whitespace is used to isolate action, making it pop for the reader. |
| Art & Graphics | The pixel-art style is essential to the book's identity and pacing. |
| Interactives & Gamification | The entire book is designed to feel like an interactive experience. |
Pace-Write It!
Students have 20 minutes to write a 'Game Over' or 'Level Up' scene. They must use at least three exclamation points and one sound effect word (like 'BOOM' or 'ZAP') to convey the intensity of the moment.
