Lesson Plan
Learning Goals
- Identify how characters demonstrate friendship through shared actions.
- Practice non-verbal communication and observation skills.
- Analyze how illustrations support the narrative of a story.
- Collaborate with a partner to create a sequence of movements.
Activity Steps
- 1.Pair students up and have them stand facing each other.
- 2.Explain that one student is the 'leader' and the other is the 'mirror' (like Sketty and Meatball).
- 3.The leader performs slow, simple movements (like sniffing a flower or wagging a tail) while the partner mimics them exactly.
- 4.Have students switch roles after two minutes.
- 5.Ask students to draw a picture of themselves and their partner doing a favorite activity together, using the book's style as inspiration.

Pace-Write-Read Study with Pace-Write It!
Sarah Weeks uses a rhythmic, repetitive structure in 'Sketty and Meatball' to mirror the synchronized lives of the two canine protagonists. By focusing on the 'do-together' nature of their friendship, the book teaches young writers how to use parallel structure to build character relationships and establish a predictable, comforting pace for the reader. This book serves as an excellent mentor text for teaching how to use simple, declarative sentences to create a sense of harmony. Writers can observe how Weeks uses the pacing of the text to match the physical actions of the dogs, showing that the speed of a story can be dictated by the characters' shared habits.
